Literary Fray Over Frey

Enough. Enough. Enough. Enough. I'm going to explode into a million little pieces if I hear one more thing about James Frey and his memoir. Enough, enough, enough. Please, please, please. All of this will cause me to drink and smoke again. Please! Stop!!!

I heard some reader is actually suing him for "time wasted." Okay, okay, I'll stop now. Aren't you glad you're a novelist who gets to lie right from the start? :-)

This is not to praise Mr. Frey for his stab at the autoboigraphy genre, but personally I think every memoir has at least a little bit of fiction in it. I mean really, who remembers every detail/incident in his/her life with perfect accuracy? When I write MY memoirs, there will definitely be a big warning sticker!

Bravo. Very clever images for your post.

Re: Cheryl's comment, it still steams me that people think time spent reading fiction is time wasted. I think good fiction tells us more of the Truth of our times than memoir or even history.

I think history classes should always include a fiction writer's response to the events of the day.
