Literary Out

Whevever I read someone's age in a magazine, I generally add five more years to it. In some cases, I knew the person in the article and thought: I know he's not THAT young. Then I go on to wonder: what's wrong with the age he's in now?
I've also written profiles about people and was researching a woman who'd been the same age in three different articles in three different years. I silently laughed about it.
Well, karma has a way of biting me in the ass.
In the March issue of Out magazines, there's a cool article on me. Through no fault of my own, they got my age wrong. They made me five years younger! There it was in black and white: Noel Alumit, 34. And you know what? I LOVED it. I'm not going to rush to the editor and tell him to print a retraction.
I know people who know me will roll their eyes when they read the article and wonder why I lied. I would never lie, but if someone else wants to do it for me, why quibble?

I do not wonder why you lied. I KNOW why you lied. 'Cuz you're Filipino! That's what THEY do!

Hmmm... It all sounds rather suspicious to me. It's just a good thing you can pass for younger. I actually enjoy telling people I'm 40 because (no joking), I get a lot of "No Way!-s" Great for the ego.

Rich and Paul, I love my age. I love it when people think I'm younger.

And Prince? Um, are you still bitter over those two Filipino guys who dumped you for someone better? Geez, get over it.

Now, if they'd said you're actually 44, would you ask for a retraction? "Los Angeles based author, Noel Alumit, featured in last month's issue is actually 39. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused Mr. Alumit."

And, yo, Guy Pearce is hot!

Yeah, if they listed me as five years older, I would hunt down the editor and pinch him really hard.

I always wonder why people don't lie and say they're older than they are. Better to get "Wow, you look amazing for 44!" than "You're looking kind of haggard for 34." (Not that you'd get that reaction--you could totally pass for 26.)

How cagey! When we all know that in real life you say you're 39 but you're actually 44!
