Literary Prizes

This is Sandra Zane. We met at the LA Times Book Festival eons ago. She was beginning her career as an agent and I was an unpublished writer. We look at the festival as our anniversary. Now, she's a full-fledged agent and I have two novels under my belt.

We went to the LA Times Book Prize show. We didn't plan on wearing velvet blazers. When we met, we just laughed at the coincidence. Great minds...

At the award show, Maxine Hong Kingston received the lifetime achievement award. At the reception, I rush and told her that I have a career today because of the foundation that she laid.

Poet Mark Doty was also there. I'd been meaning to meet him for ages.

Michael York as there...

It was most fun.

Noel - Wow, you do look dashing in your velvet blazer. Maxine Hong Kingston, one of my all time favorites, was it wonderful meeting her? The LA Times Festival of Books is one of the best weekends of my year. I have met so many wonderful authors and been introduced to books I never would have found otherwise. Just got back from a fabulous morning there with my bags of treasures, icluding my Reading is Sexy pin from the Skylight booth. Thanks for posting your pictures. Jill

Hey Noel!

How cool that you met Mark Doty!
Have you read "Lawnboy" by Paul Lisicky? He's Mark Doty's partner. I just read it and I really liked it, and I think you might really like it, too, if you haven't read it already. Like your "Letters," it's an excellent gay coming of age novel with a lot of high family drama!

Did you hit the rest of the bookfair? I would have gone but I had to go see Prince at Coachella...
